Nutrition House Diabetes Solutions Program
Diabetes is a condition resulting in an inability to either produce and/or properly utilize insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is vital for normal metabolism. Insulin enables the body to use the glucose obtained from our foods. Without insulin, glucose cannot be sufficiently absorbed from the blood stream and carried into the cells of the body, where it is converted into energy.
Two main types of diabetes include Type 1 (insulin dependent diabetes) and Type 2 (non- insulin dependent diabetes.
Type 1 is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the insulin producing cells in the pancreas so it fails to produce insulin. This disorder typically occurs in childhood or adolescence. Daily injections are required for survival
Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is the most common form (approximately 90% of Canadians are type 2) and it occurs when the pancreas does not produce adequate insulin or the cells in the body have become resistant to the effects of insulin. This disorder was an adults-only disease (typically diagnosed after 40 years of age). It is related to obesity, unhealthy eating habits and inactivity. Treatment is usually in the form of diet, exercise and sometimes medication. Today, children as young as nine years of age are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
