You may have heard people talk about the alkaline and acidity in the body. But finding clear information on what it is and its benefits can be a bit confusing.
There are certain numbers that the body has to maintain to be considered healthy. Your body regulates temperate at 98.6, blood pressure at 120/80, cholesterol under 200mg/dl, blood glucose 70-90mg/dl, etc. Most often, these numbers are monitored by your physician and checked regularly.
However, there is one number that is not monitored during regular check-ups and is only considered once a related illness is present. Your PH number (measured through urine and saliva). The pH scale goes from 0-14, where 0 represents extremely high acid, and 14 is pure alkaline. Neither of these extremes are good numbers for homeostasis. The blood naturally regulates itself at 7.365 (neutral). The ideal pH state for the body is between 7.2 and 7.4
If the body naturally regulates the body (blood) at neutral, why do you need to worry?
The purpose of eating and drinking to create a more acid/alkaline balance is not to raise your PH. The purpose is to support the body's attempts at regulating it. Your body will go to great lengths to regulate the PH of your blood in order to keep you alive. And the process of causing your body to work so hard at regulating your PH can cause harm and hardship to other systems.
While the body is working hard to create pH homeostasis in the blood, the rest of your systems can suffer and may become more acidic. The more acidic the body is, the harder your internal regulating systems have to work, the more strain the body's healthy systems and the more likely you may succumb to illness.
High levels of acid in the body at any one time can cause the body to compensate to help remove the acid and bring the blood back to its required pH Neutral state.
Excess acidity can weaken all systems in the body because acidity forces the body to borrow minerals such as calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium from vital organs, bones and teeth to buffer (neutralize) the acid and safely remove it from the body. As a result, over time, the body becomes more and more deficient in vital nutrients for optimum health and body systems start to show the adverse effects

The best way to check your pH levels is using PH sticks and a few drops of your first-morning urine void. The colour indicator on the pH stick will give you the range you are starting your day off. For example, if you are below 7.0 pH first thing in the morning, you are overly acidic and lack the necessary buffers to neutralize the acid and bring the body back into balance.
