Stress has a way of stealing sleep
When stress kicks in, your body pumps out cortisol and adrenaline, keeping you on “high alert. This creates hyperarousal, which means your body and/or mind is stuck in “high alert,” making it challenging to relax. The constant tension makes sleep more difficult, reducing its frequency, quality and quantity.
Â
Stress and Sleep Disorders share many common traits and have a reciprocal relationship, making it essential to manage both mental health problems simultaneously. Â
Â
Stress has a way of stealing sleep. It is a prevalent factor in poor or fragmented (interrupted, broken) sleep and one of the most frequent contributors to insomnia. Research shows that high daytime stress can significantly disrupt sleep, creating a vicious cycle in which stress leads to poor rest, and inadequate rest fuels more stress and daytime difficulties. And that can be hard to break. Why?Â
What came first: chronic, unmanaged stress or lack of sleep?
Â
Most people experience how a lack of sleep can lead to negative mood, low energy, poor concentration, irritability, and daytime sleepiness. Interestingly, unmanaged stress produces many of the same symptoms.
Â
Did you know that if the body feels stressed, it is not supposed to sleep deeply? This defence mechanism is designed to keep you alert and ready to respond to perceived threats.
Â
However, this heightened state of arousal in the evening can trigger nighttime anxiety, when the quiet of bedtime leaves people alone with their worries without the distractions of the day. This makes it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep, disrupting REM sleep, the stage critical for the brain to recover, reset, and strengthen mental functions such as memory, focus, problem-solving, and emotion regulation.
Â
In some instances, sleeping patterns may resume once the stressors have disappeared, but this is not the case for everyone. Some people fall into a cyclical pattern of sleep loss (insomnia).
Â
Research has shown that managing daytime stress (i.e., how the body responds to and recovers from stress) may improve the duration and quality of sleep.
Managing this cycle is key to restoring balance and well-being.
Let’s start with daytime support.  Chronic stress keeps your adrenal glands working overtime, draining their energy, and leaving you exhausted. Growing weary of those anxious thoughts and feelings that keep you awake at night? CanPrev Sleep Restore is your answer. The oasis of calming herbs (lemon balm and passionflower) helps reduce overstimulation and counteract cortisol's effects. With added GABA and L-theanine, CanPrev Sleep Restore helps relieve tension, supporting the body and mind by soothing stress and promoting a better bedtime.
Â
Â
Stress and sleep are tightly connected and have a reciprocal relationship. When stress keeps the body on high alert, deep rest becomes harder to achieve. Without quality sleep, stress becomes more problematic. CanPrev recognizes that breaking this cycle means calming the mind, restoring healthy sleep rhythms, and supporting the body with natural solutions that promote relaxation and resilience.
