How The Candy Cane Came to Be

How The Candy Cane Came to Be

candy canes on a treeBelieved to have graced Christmas celebrations as far back as 1670, the origin story of candy canes is steeped in charming folklore.

One of the most popular tales traces it back to a German choirmaster who, seeking a solution to keep children calm during Christmas Eve services, made sugar sticks. In honour of the occasion, he bent the candies into crooks to symbolize shepherds.

While the legend lacks concrete evidence, it adds a sprinkle of magic to the candy cane's story.

The first documented use of candy canes in Christmas décor came many years later, in 1847, when August Imgard, a German-Swedish immigrant, adorned a small blue spruce tree with peppermint candy canes. This marked the inception of a delightful tradition that has continued to this day.
